Workers give to Fundraiser – Published in The Cairns Sun, Dec ’09

Ergon Energy’s innovative Power Aid program has helped power up another worthy cause to the tune for nearly $1800. Cairns Ergon Energy operations and administration support staff contributed safety program points earned through the company’s Power Aid program deliver a $1790 cheque to local fundraiser Emma Lodge, who was collecting for the Cancer Council Queensland.

Power Aid is a program run within Ergon Energy which rewards staff with charity dollars for observing safe work practices and embracing a safety culture within the organisation.

Staff are able to assign the dollars they have earned to the charities of their choice.

The Ergon Energy donation to Ms Lodge helped towards raising $12,000 for the Cancer Council, with most of the money coming from a Pink Ribbon High Tea held in October.

In the Pink for Cancer Cause – Published in The Cairns Post, Oct ‘09

Cairns was in the pink yesterday with up to 220 people raising about $14,000 for breast cancer research during a “high tea” at the Shangri-La Hotel.

It was the start of what promises to be a massive week of fundraising and awareness raising this week. Today is National Breast Cancer Day and The Cairns Post will donate 10c from every paper sold to the Breast Cancer Foundation.

Radio station Sea FM is getting into the spirit, playing one song from the artist Pink every hour. And on Friday night, Cairns airport will become a sea of pink for the annual “Girls Night In” fundraiser featuring a series of charity auctions.

Emma Lodge, a fundraising volunteer for the Queensland Cancer Council, organised yesterday’s “high tea”, said the ladies enjoyed some great food before watching an inspirational video about Sharon Cohrs, who has battled breast cancer and is now planning to conquer Mt Everest.

“It was a very good result (in terms of money raised),” Ms Lodge said. “We beat our result from last year and that was our aim.”

Tickled Pink to a Mate – Published in The Cairns Port, Oct ‘09

Emma Lodge knows how to treat her good mates. When she found out her friend Sharon Cohrs was diagnosed with breast cancer last year she created the Pink Ribbon High Tea.

Sunday will bring the ultimate day for indulgence at the Shangri-La Hotel with strawberry towers, handmade truffles, cupcakes and live jazz.

Ms Lodge saw how much support Ms Cohrs received in gifts, books, flowers and also, most importantly, encouragement to battle the disease.

She asked people who attended the high tea to dress in pink and expect champagne and a pink diamante pin on arrival. Last year’s event attracted more than 200 people and raised over $10,500 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

The event, which runs from 2pm-5pm, is held as part of Pinktober in raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research.

High Tea a Stylish Affair – Published in The Cairns Sun, Oct ’09

When Emma Lodge learned her good friend Sharon Cohrs was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, Emma sprang into action.

“I saw all the beautiful gifts, flowers, books and teddies Sharon received in support, which was beautiful, but I just though it’s not going to change things at the end of the day, and I felt like I needed to do something to make a difference,” Emma says.

The result was a Pink Ribbon High Tea at the Shangri-La Hotel, which attracted more than 200 people and raised $10,500 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Strawberry Towers, dipping chocolate and other delectables wowed guests, who are already snapping up tickets for this year’s event from 2pm-5pm on Sunday, October 25.

The afternoon will feature jazz, fashion, beauty demonstrations, guest speakers and a charity auction. Expect a high tea equal or better than last year’s, champers on arrival, a pink diamante pin – and dress in pink.

Taipans taking part in the Go Pink Challenge – 20th October ’09

THE Skytrans Cairns Taipans are urging fans to relinquish their normal orange or blue garb for Saturday night’s home game against the Adelaide 36ers – and don pink.

The Skytrans Taipans are taking part in the Go Pink campaign as part of the Cancer Council Queenslands’ Breast Cancer Awareness Month and are encouraging supporters at Saturday night’s game to also get behind the cause.

Skytrans Taipans mascot Joe Blake will be appearing in a special edition pink uniform which will later be auctioned online with proceeds going to the Cancer Council Queensland.

There will be volunteers at the game selling pink ribbons and wristbands, while others will collect donations throughout the night.

Breast cancer awareness month runs throughout October and the Cancer Council Queensland is running a number of events in Cairns including a Girls Night In on October 30 and a Pink Ribbon High Tea on October 25.

The Skytrans Cairns Taipans are also providing several prizes for the Girls Night In, a ladies only event, to be held at the Cairns Airport’s International Check-in Hall 7pm to 10pm.

Skytrans Taipans Sales Manager Matt Bolton said the Go Pink campaign was an important community event the club was proud to be supporting.

“Cancer affects so many people in the community, people from all walks of life, so we jumped at the chance to do what we could to help the campaign,” Bolton said.

“Our club’s mantra is “100% Community”, so we felt it was important for us to do what we could to help raise money for breast cancer research and awareness.

“We want to see a sea of pink at Saturday night’s game as opposed to the usual orange or blue that our fans normally wear.

Mal Fraser, Cancer Support Coordinator at the Cancer Council Queensland in Cairns says “It is wonderful to have such enthusiastic support from the Cairns Taipans. Events such as this help us to raise awareness of the importance of early detection of breast cancer and assist us to fund our vital research and support programs.”

“Joe Blake is going to have a pink uniform, and probably some other fun surprises up his sleeve as well.”

The Taipans take on the Adelaide 36ers at the Cairns Convention Centre on Saturday from 7.30pm.
